Karl G. Maeser was the second principal of Brigham Young Academy and served from 1876 until 1892. Under Maeser Brigham Young Academy established itself as one of the leading schools in Utah territory. The curriculum continually expanded to meet the ever-changing and ever-increasing needs of local and regional education. Elizabeth Aretta Young (1864-1923), known as Aretta throughout her life, was born in St. Charles, Idaho, to Franklin Wheeler Young and Anna Maria Sabin. Aretta graduated from Brigham Young Academy High School in 1884 with her normal diploma. She later received a certificate in physical geography, a teacher's certificate, and Bachelor of Pedagogy degree, all from Brigham Young Academy.
